Wonthaggi desalination

“On 19 June 2007, the State Government  announced their plan to build a desalination plant in the Bass Coast Shire.

The $3.1 billion desalination plant will be the largest in Australia and is set to be completed by 2011.  The plant will provide 150 billion litres of water per year and includes an 85 kilometre pipeline connecting it to Melbourne.  Smaller pipelines will connect nearby towns in South Gippsland and the Westernport area.”
